We are offering for sale this impressionist oil on canvas by the Danish artist Alfred V. Jensen, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a cavalry officer riding a bay horse outside one of the lower wings of the Royal Stables at the Riding Ground Complex of Christiansborg Palace, which is located on the small island of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen. We know that it is one of the two lower wings, which also have espaliered trees in front of them, as well as green tiled roofs, because the central building is taller and has the Court Theatre built in the upper storey.

Alfred V. Jensen 1891-1981, is a listed Danish impressionist artist, know for his landscapes, coastal scenes and portraits of the Danish royal family. He was born in Naestved in 1891 and died at Skovshoved in 1981. There are 3 of his painting in Danish Museums.

The canvas bears a label on the back which appears to be written in Danish, but the surface seems to be partly eroded or rubbed and, as we do not speak any Danish, we have been unable to decipher it, although we did manage to read 'Jensen' and part of the date which was in July, 194. If anyone Danish would like a picture of the label or would be able to try to translate it, we would be delighted to send them a jpg.

He should not be confused with the marine painter Alfred Jensen (1859-1935). However, there is some confusion by the auction houses regarding their listings.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" silver gilt reeded frame, which suits it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition: Excellent. There is no craquelure, paint loss or stretcher marks and the surface is clean and taut. The frame is new.
