Description

We are offering for sale this portrait oil on canvas by the East Sussex artist Vera Colborne, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a half length portrait of a well dressed gentleman in a brown three piece suit, wearing spectacles and with his hand resting on a walking stick. Unfortunately, we do not know the identity of the sitter.

Vera Colborne was born in Wimbledon, Surrey in 1877, the daughter of a surgeon. by 1891, her family were living at 25 Devonshire Road, Hastings, East Sussex, which was to remain her home for the rest of her life. After the death of her parents, she continued to live with her siblings and, latterly, with her brother Lawrence M. E. Colborne, (1882-1954) who was a watercolourist, until her death in 1952.

She studied at Hastings School of Science & Art and became a portrait painter, etcher and teacher at Gainsborough Studio at 25 Devonshire Road. She painted many local notables, including the first female Mayor of Hastings, and Aldermen, authors etc. and there are four of her portraits in the National Collection, three of which are in Hastings Museum and Art Gallery. These portraits can be viewed online at artUK.org. She exhibited 3 works at the London Salon in 1909 and also exhibited locally.

She is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club)

The painting is newly framed in a 5" bronze coloured frame that suits it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition: Excellent. The surface is clean and taut and there is no craquelure or stretcher marks. The frame is new.
