Description

We are offering this interesting pair of Bookends in carved hardwoods. They have an arched rosewood back, with a smaller shaped walnut piece on the front and, on both ends there is a carved shield, possibly in mahogany. The curved section between the two halves is in rosewood, divided by a slice of walnut. Although the design on the shields is similar, the wording is different. On one end, the top half of the shield reads 'Eygpt (sic) 10.5.1943' and on the other end the top half reads 'Remembrance of POW'.

We have tried to check on the significance of the date, but found that at this time in 1943, the 8th Army and the 1st army were in Tunisia fighting the Axis armies and, in fact, the Axis, by this time under the command of the Italian General Messe (Rommel had returned to Germany due to ill health), surrendered on 13th May 1943. It may well be that the date has a personal significance to the maker of the bookends.
