Harry Hine RI ROI 1845-1941 Watercolour Old Bridge
Description
We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely watercolour by the artist Henry William Hine, (Harry Hine), who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1880. The painting depicts a group of harvesters wending their way towards a wooden bridge over a stream or small river, which is closed by a gate at one end. The watercolour has been executed in fine detail.Henry William Hine, who presumably signed his paintings Harry to distinguish them from his father, the artist Henry George Hine VPRI 1811-1895, was born in the St. Pancras area of London on 27th February, 1845. He was educated at the North London Collegiate School, after which, as the age of 13 he went to sea and became a Mate in the Merchant Navy. He began to paint at the age of 25 and exhibited at the principal London galleries from 1873. In 1874 he married Victoria Susanna Colkett RE, who was a landscape painter like her husband, and an etcher. His brother was the artist William Egerton Hine.
He was elected a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1879 and a Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1883.
He was living with his parents in Park Road Hampstead in 1871, St. Albans in 1881, 1891 and 1901 at 52 Holywell Hill and by 1911, he was living with his wife and a servant at Pulborough House, Botesdale in Suffolk. He died in Suffolk on 20th October,1941.
His biographical details may be found in The Dictionary of British Artists, (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, British Watercolour Artists by Mallalieu and the Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters.
According to Graves Dictionary, he exhibited a total of 173 paintings in London Exhibitions between 1873 and 1893, including 8 at the RA and 130 at the RI.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and newly framed in a 1 1/8" pale bronze frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
