We are offering for sale this beautifully executed watercolour waist length Portrait by the artist Anna Maria Agnes Cristall, who has signed the painting A. Cristall in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1884. The portrait has been executed on milk glass and depicts a young married woman, wearing a tan high necked dress, with a tight frill at the neck and wrists and a lace pelerine around the shoulders. she has a gold locket around her neck and is leaning her left elbow on some books, while resting her chin on her hand. Her brown har is held back in a snood, with a floral adornment on the top. She is wearing earrings and a wedding and engagement ring. The sitter has been posed outside in a garden, as there is part of a bush visible behind the books.

Anna Maris Anges Cristall was born in Blackheath, Greenwich, London in 1840, the daughter of a Ship owner, breaker, chandler, timber merchant and blacksmith, who employed 20 staff in his business. She was one of eight children and the family was obviously prosperous. She never married but was listed as an artist in the Censuses of 1881,91,1901 and 1911, this latter being the last one we can view until 2022. In the Census of 1891, she was living at 145 New Bond Street, with her sister Laura, a niece who was a landscape artist and one servant. She listed herself as an artist, miniatures etc.

In 1901, she was living with her sister and a servant at 84 Elgin Avenue, Paddington, still painting and in 1911, she was at 5 Windermere Avenue, Kilburn with a Lady Companion and a servant describing herself as an artist - watercolours. She died in 1921, while living at 15 Lanhill Road, Maida Vale with a couple by the name of Kellaway, according to the Electoral Roll for that year.

She is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) as a portrait painter, who exhibited between 1888 and 1904, including 1 at the Royal Academy and 1 at the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham.

The portrait has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and is framed in a 1 1/8" bronze/gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass hanger, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.

Condition: Very good. There is no damage to the glass and the paint is all present. The mounts and frame are new.
