Description

We are offering this very well executed watercolour by the Italian artist Antonio Enrico Fiorentino, who has signed the painting E. Fiorentino in the lower right hand corner. The subject is an Italian, possibly Neapolitan, fisherman, who has stopped to light his pipe. He is wearing his trousers rolled up to the just below the knee, has a cream shirt and a sash around his waist instead of a belt. He is wearing a red cap on the back of his head and is carrying a woven basket over one arm, possibly containing some fish. He has a long grey beard.

Not very much is known about this artist, who appears to sign his watercolours E. Fiorentino and his oils, which appear to be later in style than the watercolours, with an A. It is stated that he was born in 1894 and died in 1962, although we found an oil painting dated 1968, so would say died after 1968. He is Italian. There are 29 auction results for his work on artprice.com, the watercolours being almost without exception figure studies, while the oils are landscapes, townscapes and coastal scenes in the main.

The watercolour bears an old Rowley Gallery Label which dates the framing to pre-1990.

The painting is double mounted in two-tone mountboard and is framed in a 5/8" reeded gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass fittings, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
