We are offering for sale this finely executed watercolour of an Autumnal landscape by the artist J. Lee, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1881. The painting is entitled on the mount Autumn. The painting depicts a wide and tranquil river or large stream, with rocky banks and with some hills in the background. Autumn is approaching as the trees on both banks are in various stages of their leaves turning from green through yellow and finally to russet. There is an elderly lady carrying a bundle of faggots on a path to the left bank. The painting has been executed in great detail.

This is one of a pair of watercolours by this artist that we are listing. Unfortunately, as we do not know his Christian name and there are many artists with the surname Lee, we have been unable to discover any details about the artist, although we have found a few landscape oils by a J. Lee, who may be the same artist and was also painting in the late 19th Century.

The painting is double mounted in cream with washlines and is framed in a 7/8" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired with new brass picture wire, new brass fittings and will be ready to hang.

Medium: Watercolours

Condition: Very good. There is no foxing or fading, but there is very slight browning of the paper consistent with age. The mounts and frame are in very good condition.
