We are offering for sale this pair of tranquil, rural landscape oils on canvas by the artist H. JAMES, that are signed with a monogrammatic signature with the H & J intertwined, one to the lower left hand corner and one to the right. One painting depicts a rural scene, possibly in the early morning, showing a rutted track with puddles, and a small pool to the right of the track, winding its way between some woods with a group of pine trees nearest to the track. The banks are covered with wild flowers and there is a panoramic landscape visible through the gap in the trees. The other shows a cart track after rain, with puddles in the ruts, and the valley in the distance.

We might consider selling the paintings separately, if anyone would like only one of them.

There are a couple of H. James in our reference books, but we are unsure as to whether this artist is one of those, so we are not able to give any confirmed biographical details about him, but here are 9 auction results listed on findartinfo.com and 7 on arcadja.com. Unfortunately, it has proved impossible to find any information on him, as James is a common surname and therefore there are too many in the census records to check without a Christian name.

The paintings are newly framed in a 2 1/4" gilt frame and will be supplied wired with new brass picture wire and fittings, and will be ready to hang.

Condition: Very good. The canvases have been professionally relined at some stage in the past and are in good clean condition. There is some fine craquelure in the central sky area. The frames are new.
