We are offering for sale this lovely Edwardian Silver Card Case with Finger Ring, which is hallmarked for London and bears the letter k the date letter for 1905. It has a crocodile skin pattern and is lined in sea green watered silk on the inside back. It also bears the Registered Design No: 428858 on the front edge below the flap. The hallmark appears on the front flap, the back and the lion rampant appears on the ring.

The Case is inscribed discreetly along the top edge of the flap, as shown, A. G. Chavasse Nov. 26th 1906. We considered that it might be of interest to give the provenance for the piece and undertook some research. The case was the property of Alice Greayer Chavasse of 56 High Street, Sutton Coldfield, wife of a surgeon by the name of Howard Sidney Chavasse (1866-1938). Alice Greayer Emery was born on the 22nd August 1879 in Erdington, Warwickshire, the daughter of a metal manufacturer in comfortable circumstances. In the 4th quarter of 1902, she married Howard Sidney Chavasse and were living at the above address in Sutton Coldfield in the census of 1911, with their daughter Cynthia Frances (24.8.1903-Jan.1987). Howard died in 1938 and Alice was living alone as a Widow in Sussex in the 1939 Register. She died in 1965 in Sussex and they are buried together in St. Peter's Churchyard in Rodmell, Sussex. It may be fanciful, but we wondered whether this might have been an anniversary gift from Howard to Alice, as their marriage was during the 4th quarter of 1902.
