James Lovegrove Holt Oil Caves At Flamborough 1880
Description
We are offering for sale this lovely oil on board by the artist J. LOVEGROVE HOLT, who has signed the painting verso, entitled it Caves at Flamborough and dated it 1880. The painting depicts an inside view of one of the sea caves at Flamborough showing seagulls perching on the ledges of the rocks and the shapes created in the chalk by the force of the sea. There is seaweed on the rocks and some starfish in the water. Please look on google for many images of these caves.Flamborough Head which is situated north of Bridlington on the East Yorkshire coast, are the northernmost chalk cliffs in the UK and contain over 200 sea caves, formed by the action of the waves on the strata of the chalk. This is an area where many different types of seabirds nest, as well as seals and is a wildlife reserve.
J. LOVEGROVE HOLT was born in Oxfordshire in 1819. He married Hannah Maria Coles in St. Pancras, London on 22nd August, 1841. In the only Census record we could find for him, in 1851, he and Hannah were living at No. 5, Ashford Terrace, Shoreditch in London, with Hannah's sister. His occupation was given as Traveller. We could find no further census records for him, until his death on 21st June, 1895 in the Isle of Wight.He was probably an amateur Victorian artist who lived at St. Lawrence on the Isle of Wight, according to a label on one of the old frames that contained the pair, as well as the probate register after his death.
The painting has been newly framed in a 2 5/8" gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
