Clarence Roe & T.R.Miles Oil Farne Islands
Description
We are pleased to offer for sale this large oil on canvas by the artist CLARENCE HENRY ROE, who has signed the painting Clarence H. Roe & T. R. Miles in the lower left hand corner, dated it '90 and signed and entitled it verso The Farn Islands. As both signatures are in the hand of Clarence Roe, we assume that this was a collaboration between both artists, with the major portion by Clarence Roe.Thomas Rose Miles, who flourished 1869-1906 was also a London painter of marines and coastal scenes. He exhibited at The Royal Academy, The Royal Hibernian Academy, The Royal Society of British Artists and Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery. His works regularly achieve prices into the thousands of pounds.
The Farne Islands are a group of 15 to 20 islands, depending on the state of the tide, just off the Northumberland coast near Seahouses. They are currently administered by The National Trust and are a huge wildlife habitat for seabirds and seals. There are two lighthouses on the islands, one of which, the Longshore lighthouse was the home of the famous Grace Darling, who, at the age of 22, with her father the lighthouse-keeper rescued 9 people from the wreck of the Forfarshire on September 7th 1838.
CLARENCE HENRY ROE, 1850-1909, was the son of Robert Henry Roe and Emma Baily, the daughter of the sculptor of Nelson's column. His two brothers, Colin Graeme and Robert Ernest, were also listed artists. Some Dictionaries state that Clarence was born in Glasgow and some that he was born in Birmingham. He is also given an address in London at Tottenham Court Road, although Professor Dennis Child, in his book Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales states that he spent most of his time living a Bohemian life in his studio in Yorkshire.
He exhibited two paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1887, but obviously did not need to exhibit his work constantly in order to make a living. He was a prolific painter of Highland scenes, Lake District landscapes and marine scenes, sometimes including animals and birds.
His auction results may be viewed at artprice.com (303 listings), artnet.com (166), findartinfo.com (111), askart.com (29) and arcadja.com (95). His works often appear in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and in 2006, 8 of his oils were sold by Bonhams of Knowle at prices ranging from £260 - £4,800. He is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and the Dictionary of British Artists.
The painting is framed in a 3" ornate, swept, gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
