George B. Yarnold 1851-95 Oil R. Llugwy N. Wales

Description
We are offering for sale this very well executed 19th Century Oil Painting on Canvas by the London artist George B. Yarnold who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. We have seen a similar painting by this artist and that one is of the Bridge of the Cauldron (Pont y Pair) at Betwys y Coed in North Wales, a favourite spot for artists. The River is the River Llugwy. The painting depicts a sunset autumnal scene, with a river running below a high but narrow arched bridge and over rocks on the river bed. The river is running very fast and appears to be swollen, probably by rainfall, as it is too early for snow, and is swirling and foaming around the rocks until it falls away into a small waterfall to the right. The river banks are covered with trees with some of them in brown autumnal leaf. There is a small grassy area with some low shrubby vegetation to the left bank. The intervening years have changed the view somewhat as there are now less trees and vegetation and the town has expanded.George Bautista Yarnold was born in 1851 and died somewhere between 1891 and 1901. There appears to be no registration of his death, although 4 of his children and their mother, now a widow, were in the Census of 1901. His father was a Comedian and his mother was Spanish, possibly why he has the second name of Bautista and the family lived in various places in Lambeth or Southwark in South London. His brother Joseph W. (1854-after 1901) ws also an artist and painted similar scenes to George.
George was listed as an artist, working on his own account in the Census of 1871 and 1881, but by 1891 he was listed as a Printer. Possibly having to provide for 4 daughters, 1 son and a wife meant that he had to give up art as a profession.
He is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and his auction results appear at the usual sites, with 54 at artprice.com. There are examples of his work on google and he seemed to specialise in waterfalls and river scenes.
The painting is newly framed in a 3" ornate swept gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
