Description

We are delighted to offer for sale this beautiful watercolour by the talented artist Ethel Sophia Cheeswright, who has signed the painting E.S. Cheeswright in the lower left hand corner. We believe that the painting depicts a view of La Grande Greve bay on the west coast of Sark, with the edge of Little Sark just showing on the left hand side. Coastal views of Sark, and particularly this view, were the main subject matter of the artist.

Ethel Sophia Cheeswright was born in 1874 in Lambeth, London, the daughter of Frederick Cheeswright, the owner of the Channel Islands Shipping Company. She was educated at Ladies College and went on to study art. She started her artistic career as a miniaturist and was elected a full Member of the Royal Miniature Society in 1897. In 1892 she moved to Sark and lived there for the majority of her life, apart from during the German Occupation of the Channel Islands, when about 2000 Channel Islanders most of whom had been born outside the Channel Islands, were deported to Germany and interned at Biberach, as a reprisal for the German born citizens in Iran, where deported to camps in Australia. During her internment, she continued to paint scenes of Sark from memory. Apparently she died in 1977 at the advanced age of 103, according to Guernsey Museum, although we cannot verify this.

She exhibited from 1896-1913, 20 works at the Royal Miniature Society and 2 at the Society of Women Artists. There are two of her paintings in the National Collection in Guernsey Museum and can be viewed at ArtUK.org. Auction results for her paintings are available at the usual sites, with 104 listing at artprice.com. The highest price achieved for one of her watercolours is in excess of £1,500.
