We are offering this lovely and realistic pastel of a border collie, whose name, according to the label on the back, was Bess. The pastel was drawn by the Shropshire artist Joan Fielden, who has signed the picture in the lower right hand corner. Bess is lying in the grass, looking very alert, with some ferns behind her. As the portrait is not inscribed with the name of the subject, it would have a lovely gift for any devotee of the breed.

The border collie is a working and herding dog breed developed in the Scottish borders for herding livestock, especially sheep. It was specifically bred for intelligence and obedience.

Considered highly intelligent, extremely energetic, acrobatic and athletic, they frequently compete with great success in sheepdog trials and dog sports. They are often cited as the most intelligent of all domestic dogs. Border collies continue to be employed in their traditional work of herding livestock throughout the world and are kept as pets.

Joan Fielden lives in Telford, Shropshire and this pastel was exhibited at the Crewe Music & Arts Society, which no longer appears to exist. She executed works in pastels, gouache and watercolours and her subject matter included birds and animals, as well as abstracts. Some of her work was available in print form and there are a few auction results for her pastels and gouaches.

The pastel is mounted and is framed in a 1 1/8" dark and pale gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
