We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely Art Deco boxed Coffee Set by Royal Doulton in bone china, which is complete and undamaged. It bears the Pattern No. H1740, which dates the pattern to 1923 and the style bears the Registered number 708898, which was registered in 1925. Each piece also bears the appropriate green Royal Doulton printed mark of the period. The padded material in the lid of the box bears the logo of Stewart Dawson & Co. Regent Street, London W. and the rest of the box is lined in black velvet. The set comprises a coffee pot with lid, milk jug, sugar bowl, 6 demitasse cups and 6 saucers.

The design features bunches of grapes in three colours with leaves, over a pattern of black tracery, with stronger black lines down the handles and around the rims. The use of black in designs on table wear, is very typical of the Art Deco period.

David Stewart Dawson (1849 – 6 August 1932), frequently referred to as Stewart Dawson, was an Australian manufacturing jeweller and property tycoon born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He founded the business of Stewart Dawson and Co. in Sydney and soon had branches in Melbourne, and Auckland and Dunedin in New Zealand and Regent Street in London. After making the company a limited liability company in 1907, Dawson sold the company in 1931 to RHO Hills department store (now House of Fraser). The resulting company operated until 'around 1935'.

Royal Doulton is an English ceramic manufacturing company dating from 1815. In 1901 King Edward VII awarded the Burslem factory the Royal Warrant, allowing that part of the business to adopt new markings and a new name, Royal Doulton. The bathroom ceramics and other utilitarian wares initially continued to be branded Doulton and Co. The company added products during the first half of the 20th century, and the tableware and decorative wares tended to shift from stonewares to high-quality bone china. Figurines in fashionable styles became increasingly important, for example a series of young girls in bathing costumes, in a mild version of Art Deco. Figures continued to be important throughout the 20th century, but the peak of quality in modelling and painting is generally thought to have been between the world wars.

Condition: Very good. The set is in very good condition, in fact, barely used, if ever, with no cracks, chips or damage. The box has some wear to the covering, which has been coloured in.
