Description

We are offering this very well executed oil on canvas laid to board by the artist F. Mancini, who has signed the painting with an illegible date to the lower left hand corner and verso on the back of the board, as shown. The painting is a slightly reduced copy to the left side and the bottom, after the original by the Italian artist Giuseppe Rossi 1876-1952, who entitled the painting Pierrot. The original showed the entire chair on which the mandolin is placed and there is some sheet music on the floor in the foreground. The original was undated but was sold by Christie's on 11th May, 1990 Lot 140 and was illustrated in their catalogue, a copy of which we have ordered and will supply with the painting or forward, depending on when we receive it.

We have found an Italian painter by the name of Francesco Mancini 1830-1905, who painted street scenes in both London and Paris, as well as many landscapes in Italy, who often signed in red F. Mancini in a similar fashion, although, as we can't read the date on this painting, we cannot verify that it is by him. There was a later Francesco Mancini 1880-1954, but he signed Francesco Largo Mancini, according to Wikipedia. He painted several paintings of Harlequins and Pierrots, as well as nudes.

The painting depicts a pierrot applying make up to his face in his dressing room in a French Theatre, possibly in Paris. He is wearing the traditional long white jacket with large buttons, a ruff around his neck and matching trousers and shoes, also with buttons. He has a tight black skull cap on his head and has a white glove on one hand and is holding the pair to it in the other hand. There is a wash stand with white enamel bowl on the top behind him and a china jug standing on the floor beneath it. There are theatrical posters on the back wall.

The painting is framed in a more contemporary 2 3/4" reeded frame in verdigris and copper colouring. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
