Description

We are offering for sale this wonderfully executed and rather beautiful late Victorian English School pencil & white chalk portrait of a girl modelled as the epitome of the Goddess Flora. She is wearing a wreath of lilac leaves, with racemes of the flowers framing her face on each side. Her dress has a double frill around the v of the neckline, executed in white chalk, and in her arms she is carrying further stems of lilac. High lights of the leaves and some of the flowers are also in white chalk.

It is a very great shame that the artist hasn't signed the work because whoever he or she was, they were a master at the use of a pencil with all the variations of shade and depth that are utilised in this work, which was executed on buff paper.

The portrait has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountboard and is newly framed in a 2 1/2" soft silvery brown frame, which was chosen as it tones beautifully with the soft shades within the piece.
