Description

We are pleased to offer this attractive, rare and subtly toned pair of oils on Reeves Academy Board, by the early 20th Century artist Albert Edward Christiansen, who has signed both paintings in the bottom right hand corners, as shown. (We have only shown one of the signatures as we can only show 6) The paintings depict a scene of a man in a rowing boat going out in the morning, possibly fishing, and returning as the sun is setting. In the sunset painting, the fisherman has donned a red scarf around his neck as he returns home, and you can see land in the distance. Considering the size of the paintings, the detail on the figures in very good.

Albert Edward Christiansen was the eldest son of the well known artist Niels Hans Christiansen RAC 1851-1922. He was born in 1887 in Stepney, the eldest of 5 children, 4 of whom survived. We are unaware of where he studied, but in the 1911 Census his father wrote that his son was an artist and part time student. Presumably his father also gave him some tuition. He married Frances Louise Calvert (1892-1974) in 1916. The couple lived in Hammersmith for some years, as did his widow after his death, although she died in Cambridgeshire. He died in 1927, the cause of his death are unknown to us.

There are a few of his painting available to view at artprice.com and arcadja.com, but please be aware that, as with his father Niels, their work is often confused with that of other Scandinavian artists of similar surnames, although we have rectified that situation on artprice. Obviously his career was cut short by his early death, so there are few examples in the market.

The paintings have been newly framed in a 2" silver gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
