N.M.N. Watercolour After Vows E. B. Leighton 1915
Description
We are offering for sale this large Watercolour, which is signed with the monogram N.M.N. and dated 1915. This is a very good copy after the 1906 painting entitled 'Vows' by the artist Edmund Blair Leighton. The artist has very accurately captured the expression of the participants in the original painting, which depicts a secret meeting or tryst between a nun and a young, mustachioed man, who appears to be wearing some type of uniform. He is wearing a red jacket with stand up collar, brass buttons up the sleeves, and a matching red cap with buttoned side flaps. He has climbed a ladder to reach the top of the wall, where he and the nun are holding hands tenderly, although the nun bears the slightly worried expression of someone who fears, or hears the approaching steps of the Mother Superior. The masts of a ship are showing above the headland below and a weak sun is reflected in the waters of the bay.Edmund Blair Leighton was born on the 21st September 1852 and died on 1st September 1922 in Chiswick, where he had lived for some years. He was a very well known and regarded painter of historical subjects in oil and was elected a full Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1887. His father Charles Blair Leighton was also a painter, as was his son.
Unfortunately, we have been unable to discover the identity of the actual artist, so can provide no biographical information about him or her, although we have checked our monogram reference books and looked online.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a very nice 1 3/8" ornate gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
