We are offering this extremely well executed portrait oil on canvas by an artist who used the monogram GR or CR and dated the painting '49. The painting depicts a half length portrait of Lieutenant Arthur Norman Ommanney Peter Hill-Lowe, who was killed in action on 3rd February 1942, near Aleppo, Syria.

He was born in Tenbury, Worcestershire in 1920 and enlisted in the Royal Armoured Corps on 25th August, 1939. He was appointed an Emergency Commission to 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards on 27.7.40. He was posted to 57th Training Regiment 19.7.42. He embarked for the Middle East to join 3rd Hussars 26.7.42. Arrived Egypt 21.9.42. Joined 3rd Hussars and was killed 3rd February, 1943.

He came from a distinguished military family. His father was Captain Arthur Noel Vernon Hill-Lowe (1892-1964), North Irish Horse & Shropshire Yeomanry, who was the son of RN Commander Arthur Hill Ommanney Peter Hill-Lowe, whose father was Admiral Arthur Lowe. Admiral Arthur Lowe's father was Admiral Sir John Acworth Ommanney.

He is buried in the British War Cemetery in Aleppo, Syria, Plot 2, C3, which, as with all Commonwealth war graves, is looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Supplied with the painting will be some documentation of his service record, burial etc.

Unfortunately, although we have looked through lists of monograms, we have been unable to locate the artist of this painting.

The painting is framed in its original, 3 3/4" ornate swept gilt frame and slip. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Medium: Oils on canvas

Condition: Very good. There are no repairs to the canvas, which is clean and taut, and there is no craquelure or stretcher marks. The frame and slip are in very good condition.
