Description

We are pleased to offer for sale this interesting pair of mid 19th Century Brass 'Tavern' Candlesticks with bell metal bells. They have deep turned and dished bases, with turned suports with evidence of knurling on some of the turns and tall sconces. The bells are rung by means of tapping the little iron bar that protrudes from the bell holder, as shown in one of our photographs.

The candlesticks were used in taverns, both to light the tables and to summon the barman or barmaid to provide further drinks etc. An identical pair to these were sold at Christies in March 2013 for £750.

Height: 12 3/4" - 32.4cm

Diameter of base: 5 3/4" - 14.55cm

Material: Brass, Bell metal and Iron

Condition: Very good. The sticks are in very good, clean condition with comforting evidence of wear to the knurled patterns just visible on some of the turns.
