Description

This is a 19th Century Portrait Oil on Canvas of a Young Cavalier. The young Cavalier is wearing a black hat over his long dark hair, a cream undershirt with deep collar edged in lace, and a red jacket with full sleeves. The painting bears no signature, but inscribed on the back of the stretcher in ink, as shown, is the following 'Painter Edmund Blair-Leighton 1860-1924 approx.' Obviously, we are not aware of any information that caused the previous owners to write this inscription, which was obviously written after the death of the artist mentioned.

Edmund Blair Leighton was born on the 21st September 1852 and died on 1st September 1922 in Chiswick, where he had lived for some years. He was a very well known and regarded painter of historical subjects in oil and was elected a full Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1887. His father Charles Blair Leighton was also a painter, as was his son. There are multiple examples of his paintings on google images and we have looked to see if this painting was a copy or a copy of part of one of his paintings and cannot find one, so we cannot list it as 'after' Edmund Blair Leighton.

The painting has been newly framed in an ornate 4 1/8" wooden gilt frame, which suits it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
