Description

We are offering for sale this very well executed oil on canvas by the artist Thomas Finchett, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts the famous view of the Fairy Glen or Ffos Anoddun in Welsh, which translates to deep ditch, which is a secluded gorge on the Rivery Conwy or Afon Conwy near to Betwys-y-Coed in the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. The gorge remains virtually unchanged from the day the artist painted it, to the present day, and has remained a favourite subject for artists.

Thomas Finchett was born in December, 1858 in Great Boughton, Cheshire, the son of a grocer. He studied at Manchester School of Art and, in 1882 was awarded a Queens Prize for one of his watercolours. Strangely, this was a year after his marriage to Sarah Ann Harrison in St. Oswald's in Chester, which took place on 4th July 1881.

By 1891, he was living at No 7, Salisbury Terrace, Llanrwst, Denbighshire, Wales with his wife Sarah, who is listed in the Census as a dressmaker, two daughters, 2 sons and a servant. The family lived in Llanrwst at the same address until after the 1911 Census and possibly until the death of Thomas in June 1931, as he died in Llanrwst.

It would appear that Thomas didn't exhibit his work, as he is not listed in any of our reference books, as they draw their information from major exhibitions. However in recent years his work regularly appears on the market and the main auction results sites list his work.

The painting is listed in its original 3 3/8" faux walnut lacquerwork wooden frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition: Very good for its age. The painted was cleaned, varnished and renovated in 1981, according to a card on the back of the frame. It had several tiny repairs at the time, as shown, and has just had a light clean and revarnish. There is a small amount of craquelure around the signature and in three places in the trees to the left. There are no stretcher marks. The frame is in very good condition.
