Description

We are offering for sale this elegant pair of Brass Door Stops or Door Porters, which were made during the third quarter of the 19th Century by James Cartland & Son, Brass Founders of the Great Western Brassfoundry in Birmingham. This company was know for its many registered designs and the quality of its finish. Both of the Door Stops bear their impressed mark, as shown. The stops have a half moon handle and a simple shaft with line detail and a bell shaped base, again with central line detail and have cast iron loading.

James Cartland & Sons, (founded before c1823 as Dyer and Cartland in Loveday St.) Brass foundry, hardware, trivets, etc., Weaman Row, then 'Great Western Brass Foundry', 68-72, Constitution Hill, Birmingham, then 'Armoury Close Works', Little Green Lane, Bordeseley Green, Birmingham. Interestingly, James Frank Howard Cartland the son, was born in 1852 and died, by his own hand in 1903, suffering from overwork. His was a sad story, as he lost his only son Ronald in WWI and both of his grandsons within a day of each other in the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940, within a day of each other. His granddaughter was the novelist Dame Barbara Cartland.

Height: 11 1/2" - 29.2cm

Width: 4" - 10.1cm

Depth: 2 1/8" - 5.4cm

Weight: 1.73kg & 1.76kg

Condition: Very good. The slight disparity in the weight is because one of them has a thin bar applied with two rivets to the back where the handle meets the shaft. It is our contention that, as this has been done so well and with identical colour and quality of brass, that this was done at the original foundry.
