Description

We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely oil on board portrait by an artist whose work we have often admired, BOHUSLAV BARLOW, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it '99. The painting is a portrait study of a beautiful young woman, wearing a hat with a white feather and wrapped in a vivid scarf, which is blowing in the wind. Her face, which is the focal point of the painting is surrounded by poppies, and a theme of flowers appears in many of his works harking back to his early years in Czechoslovakia.

BOHUSLAV BARLOW, was born in 1947 as Bosuslav Klos in Moravia, Czechoslovakia. He, with his mother, fled that country before the Iron Curtain came down and initially went to Munich, where he was left with his grandmother, when his mother came to England in search of work. At the age of 8 he joined her and took the name of his stepfather and became Bohuslav Barlow. He suffered a comfortless and poverty stricken childhood but eventually pencils and crayons became his medium of expression in his drawings. He studied art at the Manchester School of Art, where he used oil paints for the first time, before taking an Honours Degree at The Central School of Art in London. He became an art teacher, but shortly decided to give this up to make his living as a full time artist.

In 1973 he moved to Todmorden in West Yorkshire and opened his own gallery, where he paints in oils, acrylics and pastels. His subject matter includes allegorical studies, figurative studies and still life. He has had numerous solo exhibitions in London and mixed exhibitions including The Royal Academy, Manchester Academy, The Royal Society of Painters, Etchers & Engravers, The Pastel Society, The International Contemporary Art Fairs at Olympia and at galleries in the USA and Oman.

He was elected a Member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts in 1991 and The Society of Graphic Fine Art in 1992.

His paintings are in numerous public and private collections including The Royal Family of Saudi Arabia, Hon. Angus Ogilvy, Beryl Reid, and Coopers Lybrand Deloittes and his paintings have been featured on television. He has also published two books of his work. There are at least seven pages of entries about him of google, where it is possible to view several interviews with him talking about his work.

Auction results for this artist are available at artprice.com (104 listings), findartinfo.com (81), artnet.com (11) and arcadja.com.

The painting has been mounted and framed by the artist's gallery and is labelled as such verso. The gilt frame is 1 1/2" wide and the painting has been double mounted. It is ready to hang.
