Description

We are pleased to offer for sale this large antique Bohemian Porcelain Plaque, which depicts two of The Muses and which is impressed TK on the back. The plaque depicts a classical scene, with two attractive adies seated on a balcony with classical columns to the right and the branches of a tree behind them. One has a lyre on her lap, the symbol of music, while the other is holding a writing table and has a stylus in her right hand, which symbolises literature.

TK, is the mark of the Graflich Thun'sche Porzellanfabrik Klosterle or Count Thun factory. It is the oldest porcelain factory in what is now the Czech Republic and was founded in 1794 in the garden of Count Thun. It is sometimes referred to as Austrian porcelain, because there is a place called Klosterle in Austria, whereas the Count Thun factory is at Klosterle an der Eger in German or Klasterec nad Ohri in Czech. We have ascertained that from 1830 to either 1889, or 1919, we have seen both listed, they used a TK impressed mark. The factory was nationalised in 1945 and currently has four branches making a range of items, including hotel porcelain.

It has been reframed and backed, probably within the last 40 years, judging by the browning of the article on the subject of plaques affixed to the backing board by an antiques journalist, who died in 2017, called David Moss, who did articles for the Daily Mail and also worked for the Antique Trade Gazette for many years.

The Plaque is framed in a 7/8" gilt frame and it will be supplied wired and ready to hang
