Description

We are offering this very decorative pair of Black Lacquer & Carved Shell, with painted gilt additions, Wall Hanging Panels. These are Shibayama style, probably created for the export market around the 1920s, when there was great interest in the Oriental, in decorative art and fashion. We say they are Shibayama style because Shibayama items have inlaid decoration and the carved shell in these is applied to the surface.

One of the panels has two ladies in a garden, with one holding a fan, while the other is swinging on a swing from a tree. There is a pagoda on rocks in the background, with the mountains and ancillary details done in gilt on the black lacquer.

In the other, the two ladies are also in a garden with a smaller pagoda in the background beneath a willow tree, while one of these is seated and the other is standing again with a fan in her hand. There is a flowing tree behind her and high mountains in the background in gilt.

Both panels are in identical 1" black lacquer and ornately gilt decorated frames and have identically patterned hangers at the top.

Panel size: 34" x 10" - 86.35cm x 25.4cm

Frame size: 36" x 12" - 91.45cm x 30.5cm

Material: Wood and shell.
