We are offering for sale this attractive and very well and finely executed watercolour by the 20th Century British ornithological artist James E. Cooke, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it '93. He has entitled the painting verso 'Pair of Hazel Grouse on Woodland Floor. The painting depicts one of the pheasants perched on a dead branch of silver birch, while the other is sitting on its nest, which are to be found on the ground. There are some blackberry shoots growing around the next. Hazel Grouse are the smallest Grouse and bear the Latin name Tetrastes Bonasia.

This is one of a pair by this artist that we will be listing.

We know that this artist flourished in the 80s and 90s, as we have found some auction results for his bird paintings, but have been unable to discover further biographical information about him, although he may come from East Anglia, as most of his painting were at auction in Norfolk.

The painting is mounted with washlines and is framed in a 1 1/2" gilt frame that suits it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
