NB We apologise for the quality of the photographs, but it has proved extremely difficult to photograph these through the convex glass. We have more close up photos of the detail which can be provided upon request.

We are pleased to offer at the Christmas season, a pair of fine quality late 19th Century oval moulded plaster relief plaques depicting the Nativity and the Resurrection, the latter bearing cast signature 'Masson', both within convex glazed frames. These are probably French in origin.

The Nativity plaque, which bears the signature, shows the Christ Child lying in the manger, with the Madonna hovering over him, with Joseph behind her, several shepherds around, with a lamb, a dog, a cow and a donkey. There are angels in the sky and a star above the stable where He was born.

The Resurrection shows five Roman soldiers around the tomb of Christ, with an angel holding the lid of the tomb, while the figure of Christ is rising from it. One of the soldiers is shielding his eyes with his arm, while the others are cowering.

There are several French sculptors with the name Masson, Francois, Clovis and Andre, but Francois mostly created busts, Clovis mainly animals and Andre was born a little too late, but it might have been either of the first two, but we have no way of verifying this.

The plaques are framed with a dark green velvet surround within oval convex glass which is set into 1 1/2" painted bronze frames. They will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Medium: Plaster

Condition: Very good. There is no damage to the plaques. The original glass is intact with only a couple of minor scratches and the frames are undamaged, although previously painted.
