Description

This is a very interesting and atmospheric Italian School oil on card which is, unfortunately, unsigned. The painting depicts the Redentore Festival on the Venice Lagoon. This Festival dates back to the 16th Century, when Doge Sebastiano Venier gave orders for Palladio to build the church of the Redentore on the island of the Giudecca to mark the end of the plage that had struck the city. On the third Saturday in July, St. Mark's Basin is full of gaily decorated boats with Venetians eating traditional local dishes.

On the Sunday, there is a religious procession for the faithful across a bridge of boats over the Giudecca canal to reach the Church of the Redentore. the weekend ends with a gondola regatta.

The painting has been double mounted in two tone to complement and is framed in a 7/8" reeded gilt frame to complement. It is ready to hang.
