We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely panoramic oil on canvas by the artist Edmund Henry Dedrick Niemann, who has signed the painting E. H. Niemann in the lower right hand corner and entitled it there Nr. Knaresboro'. The painting presents the panorama of the River Nidd valley, where the river can be seen winding its way below the ruins of Knaresborough Castle to the left and a cottage and outbuildings to the extreme right.

Please note that this artist is frequently catalogued and listed as Edward Henry Niemann, but this is incorrect according to Births, Marriages and Deaths and Census Records.

Edmund Henry Niemann was born in Reading in 1842, the son of the well known artist Edmund John Niemann 1813-1876, who exhibited some 177 paintings at London exhibitions. He received his artistic training under the tutelage of his father and was for some while his assistant before commencing his career as a landscape painter in his own right. His landscapes do take after those of his father and are often panoramic and set in Yorkshire.

According to Census records, he moved quite frequently, from 1851 in Clerkenwell, 1871 in Lambeth, 1881 Herne Hill, 1891 Richmond in Surrey and by 1910 he was living at the Glebe, Brixton Hill, South London, where he died in 1910. He had married his wife Emma Harriet Blythe, born 1856, in 1879 and they a total of 5 daughters, one of whom died in her first year, and a son Edmund John, after his father.
The family name in of German derivation, as his grandfather was born in Westphalia, but lived and worked in London at Lloyds of London.

He exhibited in 1863 and 1867 at the British Institution in London and at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin 1884-1887. There are 3 of his paintings in the National Collection, 2 ast Middlesbrough Institute and 1 at Chertsey Museum, a view of Chertsey. These can be viewed at BBC - Your Paintings by putting the artist's name into google.

His exhibitions may be found in Graves Dictionary and his biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and Benezit.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" ornate gilt frame and slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition: Very good consistent with its age. There is overall craquelure and slight stretcher marks, but no paint loss and the surface is clean and taut. The frame is new.
