Description

We are pleased to offer for sale this unusual pair of Arts & Crafts Brass Fire Dogs by the well known London maker Benham & Froud. The Dogs are stamped B & F and bear the makers mark for Benham & Froud of an Ankh and Orb. The Dogs have a trefoil below a scroll at each end and have exaggerated leaf shaped feet.

Benham & Froud existed from 1855-1924 and were based in Chandos Street, London W1, until 1906. After this time the company became Herbert Benham & Co. The reason that they use the ankh & orb as their makers mark is that the forerunner company made the replacement orb and cross for St. Paul's Cathedral in 1821.
