Description

We are offering for sale a large oil on canvas by the artist RALPH REUBEN STUBBS, who has signed the painting with his monogram in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1871. The painting depicts a river view with a small herd of cattle watering from both banks of a shallow river.

RALPH REUBEN STUBBS, c.1820-1879, was a Yorkshire artist, who lived in Hull. He specialised in marines and shipping oils, but his exhibition records also show that he painted landscapes, probably scenes in Yorkshire.

He exhibited 3 works at the Royal Academy, 2 at the British Institution and 10 at Suffolk Street, including 'Mouth of the Humber', 'Woodland Scene', and 'Off Robin Hood's Bay'.

Other than the above, there appears to be little biographical information available, but he is listed in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.

He has a total of 9 paintings available for viewing in the National Collections, including several in The Ferens Art Gallery in Hull, Whitby Museum, Wakefield and Reading Museums, Hull University Art Collection and The Cooper Gallery.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3" gilt frame, which suits it very well. It is ready to hang.

Medium Oils on Geo. Rowney & Co. Canvas

His paintings achieve high prices and there is currently a 36" x 24" canvas for sale in the US for $3,250.
