Description

We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning, tranquil and touching genre watercolour by the artist WALTER GOODALL, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1874. The painting depicts a mother lovingly watching over her sleeping child. She is sitting in a chair next to a table, on which there is a pumpkin. The child is asleep in a wooden crib. We feel that this painting is of a Continental woman, possibly Italian.

WALTER GOODALL 1830-1889, was born on the 6th November 1830 in London and was the youngest son of the engraver Edward Goodall. Two of his brothers were also artists - Edward A. Goodall RWS and Frederick Goodall RA. He studied at the Government School of Design and the Royal Academy Schools. He also attended the Slipstone Street 'Academy', later known as the Langham Sketching Society. He lived in London until 1875, when he moved to Clapham, Bedfordshire, where he died on 14th May 1889, leaving a widow and three daughters.

He was a figure, genre and domestic watercolourist primarily, although he did paint a few oils. He lived in Rome during the winter of 1868-9 and visited Venice. He also visited Holland, Brittany and the Pyranees. He suffered a paralytic seizure in 1875, the year after he painted this painting, from which he never completely recovered, and had to give up painting.

He exhibited widely, including three paintings at the Royal Academy and many exhibits in Manchester, and the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour, of which he was elected an Associate Member in 1853 and a Full Member in 1861. Many of his best works were exhibited in Manchester in 1861.

An excellent biography and family tree of the Goodall family of artists may be found at the following link . He is also listed in The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by H. Mallalieu and The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.

Auction prices achieved for works by this artist may be found at the usual sites and many of his large watercolours reach high prices.

The painting has been newly double mounted to complement and newly framed in a substantial 1 1/2" gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
