Early British Watercolour Naval Bombardment
Description
We are offering this rather interesting early watercolour of a British naval bombardment, which is unsigned. There is a smaller paddle steamer flying the white ensign firing a mortar or Congreve rocket, while a large well armed wooden three-masted vessel flying the red ensign looks as though she has fired her cannon and someone on board is pointing towards the shore or an inner harbour. There are a large number of masts visible to the right and left of the painting and a splash in the foreground where, presumably, a cannonball has landed.Unfortunately, the painting has been backed and the mount glued down, so there are no clues as to the location, and we will leave it to naval history buffs to give validity (or not) to our assessment of the scene.
The painting is mounted in its original gold mount and is framed in its original gilt frame with ornate corners. It wil be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 17 1/2" x 12 1/4" - 44.45cm x 31.1cm
Frame size: 24 5/8" x 19" - 62.5cm x 48.25cm
Medium: Watercolours
Condition: Very good. There is no apparent foxing or damage. Slight browning of the paper due to age. The mount and frame are in good condition.
