Vict. Handpainted Porcelain Plaque aft. Lidderdale
Description
We are pleased to offer for sale this very attractive Hand Painted Porcelain Plaque, which is attributed on the backing board to Charles Sillem Lidderdale. Having examined the plaque out of the frame, we found nothing to verify this, but we did find a very old label in English with original instructions to the framer, which we have photographed. Nor have we been able to find the original of the painting, although it is possible that it is a copy of one of his, as the subject and her facial appearance is very much in keeping with his paintings of young women, mostly, although not exclusively, of girls or young women in rural settings. Also many of his portraits show young women wearing similar mob caps tied with ribbon. We are, therefore, calling it style of Lidderdale. There are no makers marks on the back of the plaque, expect for two red Xs in separate places, under the glaze. We have been unable to discover the significance, if any, of these.
Charles Sillem Lidderdale (September 28, 1830, St. Petersburg - June 7, 1895, London) was a British artist whose work often focused on portraits of young women in outdoor settings. Lidderdale exhibited 36 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1856 and 1893.
The plaque depicts a young woman in three quarter profile, wearing a lace edged mob cap, tied with a yellow ribbon in a bow at the front. Her long, abundant, brown hair is in loose ringlets and she is wearing a black ribbon around her throat. Her dress is light brown, with a cream fichu and she has a chestnut brown shawl.
The plaque is framed in a 2" gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 13 1/8" x 10 1/2" - 33.25cm x 26.65cm
Frame size: 17 1/4" x 14 3/4" - 43.8cm x 37.5cm
Condition: Very good. There is no damage of paint loss to the plaque. It does have some fine, surface crazing to the glaze, which is only visible under magnification and is consistent with age.
