We are pleased to offer for sale this dramatic marine oil by the English artist Edward Anthony Swan, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner with his ornate monogram EAS. The painting depicts a pair of gaff-rigged fishing boats, heeling over before a strong wind during a squall, while a larger three masted vessel bearing two lights on her stern is bearing away in the distance. One of the crew appears to be hauling on a rope to bring down the sail.

Edward Swan is an English artist who specialised in country cottages scenes and marine paintings, originally mainly in watercolours, latterly only in oils, although we understand he is no longer working professionally as he is in his eighties. His style is very much in the detailed execution of the Victorians. He studied at St. Martin's School of Art in London and lived in Dorking in Surrey for a long period where he had his studio. He now resides in West Sussex.

His work and auction results are listed on findartinfo.com (who have wrongly listed him as 19th Century), artnet.com and arcadja.com. However, some of the auction sites have confused his work with a 1920 commercial artist by the name of Edward Swann, who created posters and drawings mainly.

The painting is framed in an attractive burr walnut veneered and black painted 2 7/8" frame and fine gilt slip. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
