Description

We are offering this finely cast Regency Egyptian Revival Bronze Sphinx on a stepped black Derbyshire Marble Base. The base is flat at the back with no step. The Sphinx, which has the body of a lion and the head of a king, is adorned with a decorative vestment, terminating with a tassel half way down the back.

The Egyptian Revival movement in decorative arts flourished during the Regency period, largely following Napoleon's conquest of Egypt when he took a scientific expedition along with him and their discoveries were published from 1809 in their Description de l'Égypte. There were smaller revivals following later discoveries up until the 1920s, with the advent of Art Deco, which followed similar designs.
