Description

We are pleased to offer this very well executed portrait oil on canvas, circa late 1890s. We have dated the painting by the age of the canvas and the dress and style of the subject. In the late 1890s, older gentlemen were still sporting beards, although younger men either had moustaches or were clean shaven. Also in the early 1890s wing collars were still in vogue, although towards the end of the decade, turn over collars were more fashionable.

The portrait depicts a well dressed distinguished gentleman, probably in his late 50s or early 60s, with a full head of wavy, silver hair, blue eyes and sporting a neatly trimmed but luxuriant beard. He is wearing a dark grey or black overcoat over a three piece suit, with a high buttoning waistcoat and a cravat held in place by a jewelled cravat pin.

Unfortunately, the painting is unsigned, so we do not know the identy of the sitter.

The portrait is on its original unlined canvas and is framed in a more contemporary 2 7/8" reeded gilt frame that suits it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
