Emil A. Krause Watercolour Barges On The Mersey
Description
We are delighted to offer for sale this little jewel of a watercolour by the artist Emil Albert Krause, who has signed the painting E.A. Krause in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a view of a group of barges on the River Mersey in Liverpool and has been entitled verso 'Barges on the Mersey' by the artist. The painting has been executed in great detail. There is a great deal of confusion over this artist, as he is frequently listed as Danish. However, there are two artist with the name Emil A. Krause. One was born in Copenhagen and lived in Denmark for his entire life, as far as we know. His name was Emil Axel Krause. He painted almost exclusively in oils - rural scenes and scenes of fisherman and signed his paintings E.K normally. These are wrongly attributed to the other Emil Albert Krause, whose biography we will give below. We know that our information is accurate, as we obtained it mostly from a relative and, on google, we came across a Danish site (which google translated) which explained the difference and also showed a signature of the artist that we are listing, to differentiate from the Danish Emil Krause.
Our Emil Albert Krause was born in Biesdorf, Germany on 8th July 1866 and was the son of Franz Emil Herman Krause 1836-1900. He moved to England with his father and mother Amelia and they all became naturalised British subjects in 1881. They firstly lived at 42 Liverpool Road, Birkdale, Southport, Lancashire, with his father later moving to Conwy in North Wales, where Emil also spent some time, as he exhibited from there. His mother was an Amelia Stock, whose father Johann Stock was also an artist. He officially changed his name to Emil Albert Stock in 1916, although he sometimes signed as A. Stock, presumably to anglicise his name due to the anti-German feeling during the WWI. He died on 18th November, 1922 and was buried in the Duke Street Cemetery in Southport with his mother and brother Richard. His father Francis was buried in Conwy.
He exhibited 1891-1914 as Emil A. Krause, 14 paintings at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 3 at the Manchester City A.G. and 20 at the Royal Cambrian Academy. He exhibited 1 painting at the Walker again in 1921 as E. A. Stock.
The majority of the auction results sites, including artprice, artnet, findartinfo and arcadja attribute both artists' work to the Danish Krause and give his birth and death dates. The only site that shows both artists correctly is askart.com. Many online galleries selling his work also fall into the same trap, as they are presumably getting the details from the auction sites. The German Emil Albert painted almost exclusively in watercolours, although we have found a couple of oils which are obviously his. We presume that he was taught by his father, as we have no knowledge of him studying art, although he may have done.
A watercolour of Mount Orgeuil Castle, Jersey was sold by Christie's on lst March 2011 for £2,125. The majority of his painting are much smaller, as is this one.
The painting is newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 1/2" silver frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
