Description

We are offering for sale this dramatic shipwreck oil painting on canvas, which is very indistinctly signed in the lower right hand corner and dated 1852. The painting depicts a rescue at sea, with a small sailing boat battling the waves to rescue the few survivors of the wreck of a much larger ship. Two of them are clinging to the splintered remains of the mainmast, with one more hanging on with both hands to a rope dangling from the mast. The crew of the small vessel have just dropped their mainsail, presumably to slow the boat down and enable them to pick up the survivors. Judging by the colour of the sky, it is either dawn or sunset, although the old rhyme about 'red sky in the morning, sailors warning', may be the case here.

The signature, unfortunately, is totally illegible, but the date is quite clear, but we have been unable to photograph it as it is partially around the edge of the stretcher.

The painting has been newly framed in a 4 1/2" coppery bronze frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
