Description

We are pleased to offer this very accurate rendition in watercolours of an Edgar Class Protected Cruiser of the Royal Navy. This class comprised nine vessels including HMS Edgar, Hawke, Endymion, Gibraltar, Royal Arthur and Crescent. The latter two ships were built slightly differently, with a raised forecastle and two forward guns, so this painting must be of one of these two, but we cannot distinguish which one. These warships were of the pre-dreadnought era and were built between 1893 and 1896 and their careers lasted through WWI until the 1920s when they were scrapped.

The ship is obviously steaming through coastal waters, due to the number of yachts and sailing vessels in close proximity, but we have no further knowledge of her location.

Although the majority of the signature of the artist is clear, unfortunately, the initial and/or first letter of the surname and are now and, although we have tried all the obvious combinations, we have been unable to decipher it or find an artist with a similar signature.

The watercolour has been newly double mounted in two-tone acid-free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a pale bronze/gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
