Description

We are offering this subtly toned watercolour of a Continental town scene by the artist PIERRE LE BOEUFF, a pseudonym used by THOMAS EDWARD FRANCIS (1873-1961) for his French landscapes and town scenes and is signed by him in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a view of a bridge with a typically continental house or toll house at the end of the bridge, with steps running down to the river, where there are a couple of moored boats. The local townswomen are hanging their washing over the walls of the river to dry. There is a large church or cathedral to the right of the painting.

To quote from Jeremy Wood's book 'Hidden Talents A Dictionary of Neglected Artists working 1880-1950,

'Pierre Le Boeuff (fl. 1900s - 1920s) This was a pseudonym of Thomas Edward Francis, which he often signed on his French landscapes and town scenes. The oil paintings are mostly inscribed on the reverse and the subjects include town scenes in Normandy and Belgium. The French and Belgium views are usually signed Le Boeuff because the use of a foreign artist's name made the subject easier to sell. The town scenes in particular are most attractive and can command high prices.'

About Thomas Edward Francis he also states,

'London landscape painter in oil and watercolour who exhibited mostly in London in the first decade of the twentieth century. The artist appears to have painted under a number of pseudonyms, particularly 'Pierre Le Boueff', 'Arthur Drew' and 'Andrea Vasari'.
