Description

This is a delightful and beautifully toned still life study by the artist GUY W. SWAIN 1907-1981), who has not signed the painting, but there was a pencil notation on the old framer's label, that the painting was executed by him in 1925, whilst he was studying at Nottingham School of Art, where he also won a prize for 'Memory drawing'. The painting depicts a model of a seagull, possibly a black-headed gull in summer plumage, next to a limpet shell and is executed in beautifully soft tones of blues and greens.

There are two listings for his work on artprice.com and we also found a listing for a William Ernest Swain (1881-1960), who was a Nottingham artist and an Associate Member of the Nottingham Society of Artists, who was his father, and who was exhibiting between 1921 and 1929. His younger brother Peter also studied at Nottingham, so obviously they were an artistic family.

The painting has been newly mounted in cream and is framed in a 7/8" coppery gilt frame to suit.
