Description

This is a wonderful Still Life Oil Painting by the English artist Mary Dipnall, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. It is entitled 'Merrydown Plums' on the A. R. Whibley gallery label on the back of the stretcher, which also gives the canvas size as 22" x 16". The painting depicts a shelf in a potting shed, with many terracotta plant pots, a trowel and the odd jar in the background. A shaft of light is falling onto a wicker basket of red and green apples and plums. There are a few apples and plums surrounding the basket and a cream china bowl of plums to the right.

Mary Dipnall was born into an artistic family in Portsmouth in 1936 and has lived in Hampshire her entire life. Her artistic talent was recognised at the early age of 9 when she received an honours certificate from the Royal Drawing Society. However it took until the 1970s, after her marriage and the birth of her two sons, before she started painting for her own pleasure and discovered a demand for her work.

Her early works were based on memories of West Country holidays and outings with her family. She had her first exhibition in London in 1980. She paints still life, landscape with flowers, as well as detailed paintings of wild flowers alone. Her work is widely available in print and poster form.

The painting is framed in a 2 3/4" cream amd gilt ornate, swept gilt frame and gilt slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang. The frame bears an A. R. Whitbley gallery label.
