Description

This is a lovely and very large pastel Portrait of an attractive lady coiffed and dressed in the fashion of the 1790s in the style of Gainsborough. Her hair is dressed in plump curls and longer at the back and may be lightly powdered. She has a low white chemise under her plum coloured dress, with a high stand up collar at the back.

As the pastel isn't signed, we can offer no information about the artist, although it is possible that they may be Continental, as there is a barely legible printed mark on the reverse of the paper, which we have managed to decipher by researching paper marks online. It says 'EXPOSITIONS UNIVERSELLES 1855-1900 MEDAILLES DE BRONZE, PAPIERS, CARTES, TOILES, ANTI-PONCE POUR LE PASTEL Pl. Eq. PARIS MARQUES DEPOSEE MADE IN FRANCE. This mark refers to Prized awarded to the Paper Manufacturer at these 19th Century Paris Exhibitions, which followed shortly after the Great 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London. However, we have also found out that a company called Lechertier Barbe Ltd. of 95 Jermyn Street, London SW sold pastel paper with this mark stamped on the back, so it is possible that the paper was purchased in the UK.

The pastel has been newly double mounted in two tone acid-free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a lovely 2" rope design frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
