V.Watson Pointillist W/colour Nature's Creatures

1 of 6
Description
This is a rather wonderful pointillist watercolour by the early 20th Century artist Vera Watson, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a willow tree by a river, but the tree has many faces in its trunk. Clustered amongst its branches are squirrels, one wearing a necklace and a flower as a hat, owls, dragonflies, butterflies and a solitary robin. There are pairs of birds of every different hue flying around the trunk and rabbits on the opposite bank. There are fish in the river, ducks and swans swimming on it and, beneath the tree, are frogs around a toadstool with one frong seated on the top of it, wearing a daisy chain. There are hedgehogs, ladybirds, grasshoppers and possibly other creatures, as every time you look at this painting you spot something you haven't noticed before. The painting would make a great talking point for a nature lover's wall or for the bedroom of a child, who would have great fun spotting all the different animated creatures.
Pointillism was started by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, who developed the technique in 1886 in a movement known as Neo-Impressionism. It is normally done in oil paints, as they do not bleed and consists of little dots of colour next to each other to create tone, rather than blending the colours together on a palette.
This painting must have taken Vera Watson many hours to complete, as she would have had to wait for the paint to dry before adding another colour.
We have found one other watercolour and several linocut prints that have been sold at auction or online in recent years by this artist, which have led to believe that the artist was working in the early part of the 20th Century and, possibly in the Kent/Sussex area.
The painting has been newly framed in a 2 3/8" reeded beige frame which suits the painting very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
