Description

This is a wonderful Chromolithograph of a Edwardian beauty after the painting, most probably a pastel, by the artist Maurice Randall.

MAURICE RANDALL 1865-1951 is a listed artist, illustrator and poster designer. He was born in Littlehampton, Sussex, one of eight children and the son of a tailor and draper. He is renowned as a marine artist, but we have found that he exhibited a range of pastels of beautiful women at the Mendoza Gallery in London in either 1905 or 1908 and this portrait may have been taken from one of those. This information was found online under the heading Exhibition Culture in London 1878-1908, by the University of Glasgow. Several of his portraits were made into prints or photogravures and were available through subscription to various magazines or given away with special editions. His portrait entitled 'Rose' was one of these, as was 'Pink Poppies' which appeared on the front cover of The Illustrated London News.

He was commissioned by the town of Littlehampton to paint a portrait of The Duchess of Norfolk in 1904, which was to hang in Arundel Castle. In 1915, his portrait of Edith Cavell appeared on the front of a souvenir programme of a concernt in aid of War Charities.

He designed many posters for the War Effort and for various shipping lines, including the Union Castle Line and the Blue Star Line.

He exhibited 3 paintings at the Royal Academy, 3 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watecolour, 2 at the Dudley Gallery, 1 at the Glasgow Institute, 6 at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool and 1 at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham. This information comes from his listing in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club).
