Description

We are offering for sale this lovely and unusual pair of French, 19th Century lamps, which depict a Knight and his Lady, both wearing armour. The Knight is wearing full armour from head to toe, including a chain mail skirt and head and neck covering, under his comb morion helmet. His Lady is wearing an armoured breastplate, gauntlets, shoes and a helmet with a visor and back neck covering. Her skirt appears to be of fabric.

They are both holding a brass rod, on top of which is a spelter shade holder, which is enclosing the original frosted glass flambeau shades. Both lamps are set on a circular, stepped wooden base. On the back of the spelter base of the lamps is a circular brass disc, which is marked 'FABRICATION FRANCAISE PARIS MADE IN FRANCE' with a motif in the centre, of a crucible for pouring molten metal, set upon flames. This foundry mark appeared from 1892 to 1915, and cast lamps, figurines etc. in spelter from the original bronze sculptures. The MADE IN FRANCE in English came about after an Act in 1891 declared that all goods exported to the USA had to bear the country of origin.

The lamps are in working order and the wiring appears in excellent condition, however, it is recommended that all electrical items are checked by a certified electrician prior to use.
