Description

This is a lovely 19th Century watercolour in the most beautiful original and ornate swept frame by the artist Miss C. Thornhill, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts an ornate gilded bowl standing on paw feet, filled with hydrangeas in shades of white, purples and blues. The painting was framed, if not purchased from Harrods and bears their label on the reverse of the frame.

Unfortunately, as Miss Thornhill is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists as Miss C. we do not have a Christian name to obtain further biographical information, but according to this dictionary, she exhibited in 1894, 1 painting at the Royal Society of British Artists and 1 at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours. At this time, she was living at 13 Gilmore Road, Lewisham in London, but this address proved fruitless in our search in the Census records of 1891 and 1901.

There is one auction records for her work in recent years, which was another beautifully executed watercolour of roses, so we consider that floral still life watercolours may have been her speciality.

The painting is framed, as stated, in a 3" gilt frame and slip, in glazed, and will be supplied wired and ready to hang. The painting has never been removed from its frame.
